Inaugural Fermilab Natural Areas Discovery Day

Take advantage of a unique opportunity to hike the grounds of one of the country’s biggest government research sites from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 14, during the first Fermilab Natural Areas Discovery Day. Buses will depart from the Fermilab Village to four locations in Fermilab for walking tours. Meet site stewards and discover what makes these natural areas special. Wear close-toed shoes, long pants, insect repellant and expect uneven surfaces.

Observe nature thriving where there was once a major construction project. Stops include Nepese Marsh, a 1960s sewage lagoon that is now an EPA award-winning marsh; Big Woods North, a historical woods that is home to birds, butterflies and more; Indian Creek Woods, featuring the main injector wetland mitigation and a remnant ecosystem; and Main Ring Savanna, with towering oaks, historic prairie restoration and migratory birds.

Suggested donation is $5 (driver's license ID required). To make a reservation (required), call 630-840-4845 or email [email protected]. For more information, visit FermilabNaturalAreas.org/discovery.
