Green Apple Day of Service: Gives Students a Lift

May 25, 2012 ● By Carrie Jackson

The next time fall semester rolls around, schools all over the country will have a new ally in the quest for student projects that involve sustainability, recycling, conservation or energy efficiency. The Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is hosting a Green Apple Day of Service, September 29. Organizers encourage students and communities to get involved as an easy way to start school environmental program.

Courtney Schiappa, program coordinator for the Illinois Chapter of the USGBC, says the new program is both an awareness campaign and a great tool for schools to improve their sustainability. “The students can suggest any kind of project that interests them,” she says, “and each school will have a mentor appointed to help them out.”

From conducting an energy or lighting audit to planting a garden or cleaning up an empty lot, there is no shortage of projects available, and Schiappa is confident that students will develop the skills to continue on their own.
