World Fair Trade Day in Daley Plaza

Chicago will celebrate the fourth annual World Fair Trade Day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 9, in Daley Plaza. Co-sponsored by Chicago Fair Trade and the city Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, the event offers more than 25 fair trade vendors in a global marketplace, interactive activities and a West African drumming demonstration at noon.

A Fair Trade Tour will make stops at key locations important in building consumer awareness in the campaign to make Chicago a fair trade city, which was achieved a year ago, and connect Chicago to a network of 1,000 committed towns and cities around the globe. The tour includes eight stops that highlight the role of local Chicago businesses in building global partnerships that both enrich the city and sustain communities around the world.

Fair trade is a worldwide movement aimed toward reducing poverty by providing farmers and artisans in developing countries a fair wage for their work. World Fair Trade Day was designed to raise awareness of fair trade globally.
