Sugar Beet Co-op to Open in 2015

Architect rendering of Sugar Beet Co-op

The Sugar Beet Food Store Cooperative, a member-owned, full-service grocery, plans to open a 5,300-square-foot store at 812 Madison Street, in Oak Park, in early 2015. The Sugar Beet Co-op will be owned by members of the community and sell food directly from local farms and producers, many of which are regulars at the Oak Park Farmers’ Market, including Genesis Organic Growers and Tomato Mountain Farm.

The Sugar Beet Co-op will carry a wide range of products, including organic and sustainably grown fruits and vegetables, bulk items, local dairy products, eggs, meat, prepared foods and more. One of the benefits of shopping at the Sugar Beet will include connecting consumers to local farmers and producers, so people will know how their food is grown and prepared. The store will feature a small café seating area and host workshops, tastings and cooking demos to get the community excited about preparing and eating good food.

The Sugar Beet Co-op will be open to the public, although only members will be entitled to store discounts, voting rights on important issues and ownership in the store. Membership is open to everyone and can be purchased through the website.
