Helping Clients to Remove Unseen Toxins from their Lives

Karen Levy Bashkin

Registered Advanced Practice Nurse Karen Levy Bashkin is the founder and principal of You, Me Toxic-Free, a Deerfield-based company specializing in helping people to preserve their health, recover from chronic illness and prevent future ailments. Using a combination of education and one-on-one work, Bashkin helps clients rid their homes of chemicals that could literally be making them sick.

She also teaches practical ways to replace mass-marketed cleaners, personal care products, cosmetics and low-nutrient food with non-toxic, healthful and affordable alternatives. “When we preserve our immune system, we can prevent illness and chronic health problems. To do this, we need to get the toxic chemicals out of our houses and our lives,” she says.

“Pregnant women and new moms are my favorite clients,” states Bashkin. “The nervous system is the last part of the baby’s body to develop, and it is so critical that I am able to work with women to get chemicals out of the home before the baby arrives.” She also specializes in helping those with chronic conditions, such as asthma and autoimmune disorders, to reduce exacerbations and improve overall health by removing toxic chemicals and educating sufferers about more effective nutritional choices. By reducing the triggers that can cause irritation and inflammation in the lungs and other body systems, she can help them to heal and feel better.

Bashkin’s career began when she learned the extent to which manufacturers are exempt from labeling chemicals used in foods, cleaning products, clothing and  everything we encounter in daily life. She points to formaldehydes—a low -cost preservative used in personal care products such as toothpaste, soap and cosmetics—as one of the main health risks that remain unlabeled or bear misleading names on an ingredient list. Unlabeled preservative sprays used on fruits and vegetables pose similar long-term health risks and remain mostly unknown to the most consumers.

“We need to do the best we can with the choices we have, and I show people how they can make manageable change in their lives to improve current health and reduce toxic exposure to lessen risk for future illness. Personal budgets are acknowledged and time restraints respected. When we know better—what to buy and use—we all can do better,” Bashkin says.
