Fair Trade Gala Highlights Anti-Sweatshop Ordinance

Chicago Fair Trade will hold a gala event featuring a silent auction, raffle, heavy appetizers, craft beer, fair trade cocktails and wine from 5:30 to 9 p.m., November 14, at the National Museum of Mexican Art to present its annual Changemaker award to Chicago’s 47th Ward Alderman Ameya Pawar and fashion designer/labor rights activist Jamie Hayes. Veteran journalist Vicente Serrano, of the independent Radio Sin Censura, will serve as emcee.

Pawar and Hayes each played a critical role in the successful Chicago Fair Trade campaign to pass an anti-sweatshop ordinance in Chicago. This year’s gala will feature fair trade stories of Latin American producers from Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, Chile, El Salvador, Argentina and México, illustrating how everyday products from jewelry to coffee and chocolate are improving the lives of workers in communities abroad.

Guests will also have access to the museum’s acclaimed Day of the Dead exhibit from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
