Lisa M. Rose, a Michigan herbalist, forager, urban farmer and author of Midwest Foraging, has written a new book, Midwest Medicinal Plants: Identify, Harvest, and Use 109 Wild Herbs for Health and Wellness (Timber Press, 2017).

Rose’s interest in ethno botany and herbal medicine has taken her across the U.S. into the Yucatán Peninsula, mainland Mexico, Nicaragua and Brazil to study plants, people, health and their connections to places. She leads foraging plant walks and teaches classes on edible and medicinal wild plants.

She says, “Treasured medicinal plants are abundant in the Midwest, and the best herbal remedies come from the freshest local leaves, fruits, roots and bark. For beginners and experienced herbalists alike, Midwest Medicinal Plants is an essential companion for finding, identifying, harvesting and safely using wild medicinal plants in the region.” This comprehensive, accessible, full-color guide includes plant profiles, step-by-step instructions for essential herbal remedies and seasonal foraging tips.

The book is intended for wild crafters in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Ontario, Canada.
