World Fair Trade Day at Daley Plaza

Celebrate Chicago’s status as a global fair trade city during World Fair Trade Day(s), from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 7 and 8, at Daley Plaza. Learn about global producers and join with more than 1,000 fair trade cities around the world to recognize the growing movement for ethical consumption.

The event, co-sponsored by Chicago Fair Trade, the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection and Natural Awakenings magazine, features a global marketplace with 20 fair trade vendors selling products that protect the environment and pay producers a living wage, interactive activities at the Global Action booth and West African drum music.

WBEZ World View host Jerome McDonnell will emcee a program at noon Tuesday, with remarks by the trade consul of South Africa. A fair trade cocoa farmer from Ghana will provide insight into the global cocoa industry and the challenge to eliminate child labor. Wednesday’s program emcee, Emanuel Kuntzelman, of Greenheart, will highlight fair trade links to the sustainability movement and include remarks by Chicago Chief Sustainability Officer Karen Weigert and Pushpika Freitas, of MarketPlace:Handwork of India.
