Globalfest Africa Gala to Celebrate Fair Trade Month in Chicago

Chicago Fair Trade presents GlobalFest Africa, from 5:30 to 9 p.m., October 17, at DIRTT (Doing It Right This Time) Environmental Solutions. The gala features a silent auction, appetizers and fair trade House of Mandela wine, which emphasizes community as evident in their commitment to environmentally and ethically responsible production.

Emcee Donnadelliah Maluleke, economic consul for the South African Consulate in Chicago, will present the annual Changemaker award to Jan Rodriguez, who led volunteers to build fair trade awareness in Chicago’s northern suburbs.

This year’s event includes fair trade stories of producers from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda that illustrate how the products that permeate our everyday lives, from jewelry to chocolate, are improving communities abroad.

Chicago Fair Trade comprises more than 70 member organizations, businesses, nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups and educational institutions, as well as students and individual activists, that work to increase support for fair trade in the Chicago metro area through education, advocacy and consumer campaigns.

Tickets start at $50 advance/$60 at the door. Location: 325 N. Wells St., Chicago. For more information, visit ChicagoFairTrade.org.
