Explore Organic Growing Techniques at Prairie Crossing Farm

Jeff Miller, of Sandhill Family Farms, which supplies certified organic vegetables throughout the Chicago region, will conduct a Farm Ridge Hike from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., July 23, at the Prairie Crossing Farm, in Grayslake. Miller will discuss Sandhill’s organic growing practices, pest management strategies, season extension methods and more.

Participants will walk around a working farm on uneven surfaces and should come prepared with sunscreen, insect repellent and a filled water bottle. Portable restroom facilities are available at the Prairie Crossing Farm. No pets except service dogs and no smoking is allowed.

The Liberty Prairie Foundation’s partnership with Sandhill extends beyond their long-term lease of farm land and facilities at the Prairie Crossing Farm. Sandhill provides technical assistance for the overall management of the farm and is a leader and a partner in many of the Foundation’s food systems initiatives. Sandhill was named the first Mentor Farmer of the Year by the Upper Midwest Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training and Angelic Organics Learning Center in 2013.
