The Chicago Excellence in Gardening Awards (CEGA) comes to the Windy City this summer, providing an opportunity for Chicago gardeners to strut their stuff. CEGA is seeking judges for the competition through June 1; judging begins July 1 and awards will be presented in September. Experienced gardeners of all kinds are welcome to apply to be a judge.
The five gardens types that are eligible to receive the awards include ornamental, vegetable, container, green roofs and walls, and specialized gardens (such as rain gardens, enabling gardens, sidewalk cafes and others). The four categories are single family, multi-unit residential, schools, and other organizations (such as churches, businesses, fire stations, etc.). Recognizing the contributions of neighborhoods that work together to create healthier and greener areas, 12 community gardens throughout the city will be awarded for their contributions.
Sponsored by The Mike Nowak Show, University of Illinois Extension, Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Community Gardeners Association and Natural Awakenings Chicago, the competition is open to residents of the city of Chicago.
