Aug 28, 2018 07:46PM

The annual Evanston Streets Alive Festival will transform Main Street into a mile-long public park from 1 to 5 p.m., September 9, featuring fun family activities, delicious food, street art and a green market offering residents new ways to live a healthier, greener life.

From Chicago Avenue to Crown Park, this open streets festival is organized by Citizens’ Greener Evanston (CGE), the Evanston Environmental Association (EEA) and the city of Evanston. The event is presented by the NorthShore University HealthSystem. Sponsors include Natural Awakenings Chicago, the Mike Nowak Show and many others.

Highlights include live music, kids’ crafts, pollinator garden tours, bubbles, chalk art, painting, bike decorating, sports demonstrations/activities and food vendors. The event includes a Green Living Festival that gives local businesses and organizations the opportunity to present their green products, services and ideas for a healthier, greener life.

Streets Alive is part of the national “livability cities” movement, sparked by Jane Jacobs’ book The Death and Life of Great American Cities to create healthy urban citizens and sustainable environments. In this vision, streets aren’t just for traveling—but also for lingering, shopping, meeting friends or strolling.
