The Worst is Over—Build Back Fairer

Cartoon style shops in a town

Chicago Fair Trade is sponsoring Build Back Fairer as part of World Fair Trade Day 2021 observed on May 8 with a three-part challenge to educate, activate and celebrate. Participants can complete the challenge by taking at least one action in each area over three weeks.

This past year upended our lives but also has inspired many to think more carefully about what is important, what we truly need and where we spend our money. As we venture out to eat and shop, there is a unique opportunity to use our purchasing power to build back fairer.

Think about how good it feels when we have an authentic, personal transaction: grabbing coffee at a locally owned coffee shop or buying produce from a local farmers’ market. Imagine having that feeling every day.

EDUCATE: Check out articles, books, video clips and feature length films to better understand the importance of fair trade and ethical consumption.

ACTIVATE: Find local events, campaigns, petitions and where to purchase fair trade goods.

CELEBRATE: Inspire others and spread the word. A Build Back Fairer Awards ceremony will be broadcast live at 6 p.m., May 7.
