The Great Seed (and Soil!) Event will return to McHenry County College (MCC) on February 7 for its third year with an expanded lineup of experts and informative activities. Hosted by the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners and the Center for Agrarian Learning at MCC, this free program will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the college cafeteria.
Organizers note that the gathering has grown far beyond a traditional seed swap. Community partners, vendors, raffles, kids’ activities and garden-related demonstrations will be available throughout the event. Doors open at 10 a.m., and early entry is not permitted. Attendees are asked to take only the seeds they expect to use so supplies remain ample. Bringing seeds is welcomed, but not required.
Scheduled speakers include Stephanie Tesmer on Backyard Food Forest and Will Akin of Will’s Native Perennials on Why and How to Build a 10x10 Pocket Prairie. In addition, Midwest Organics and the IL Food Scrap and Composting Coalition will present together on home and commercial composting tips and advice.
Location: 8900 NW Hwy. 14, Crystal Lake. Registration is requested, but not required. For more information or to register, visit Eventbrite.com/e/the-great-seed-event-of-2026-tickets-1500395215479.
