The Darien Garden Club and Indian Prairie Public Library will co-host Wild Oaktober, a free, family-friendly event from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on October 18 at the Darien-based library. The walk-up event will feature educational exhibits, hands-on activities and interactive experiences celebrating the importance of oak trees and the ecosystems they support.
Visitors can learn to identify oak trees, discover their ecological significance and explore ways to help restore native oak habitats. Activities will include crafts, games, tree identification tours on the library grounds and opportunities to test tree-mendous knowledge by identifying trees through their bark, leaves, branching patterns and overall shape. Oak saplings, courtesy of Bartlett Tree Experts, will be available while supplies last, and participants can also learn how to grow an oak tree from an acorn.
Master Naturalists from the Jurica-Suchy Nature Museum will be on hand to provide information about native trees and the wildlife that depend on them. At 2 p.m., Heather Prince, of Fearless Gardening, will present A Natural History of Oaks in the library’s Keshav Sanghani Meeting Room.
