Natural Light Helps Connect the Pineal Gland With the Body’s Daily Rhythms
Morning light is fundamental to our well-being. Light is one of the primary signals that tells our bodies what time it is. But sunlight is much more than a simple alternation between light and darkness or something that allows us to see the world around us. It carries a deeper, more intimate message for the human body.
We have a gland called the pineal gland, which helps translate light into biological rhythms and contributes to our neuroendocrine response. In this sense, light can be considered nourishment for the pineal gland, historically associated with the “third eye”.
In my work as a neurologist, I explore how the signals of light and infrasound that surround us can be understood through frequencies and wavelengths. Light does much more than support vision: It can also influence the way we feel, helping us become more confident, aware and creative.
I believe the pineal gland also represents a connection to our ancestors, our historical DNA, and something ancient and archaic within us. The Egyptians, the Sumerians and other ancient civilizations possessed a profound understanding of symbols. They left us images such as the pinecone and the third eye, symbols that appear across different religious and cultural traditions, including Catholic and Orthodox traditions. Whatever our religion may be, these recurring symbols invite us to turn our attention inward rather than constantly focusing on the external world, on illusions, projects and possessions.
Our inner awareness must come first. We are guests on this planet, not its owners, and recognizing this can help us experience life as something we share with the people and the world around us.
Modern life can make it more difficult for us to feel truly connected. I see the pineal gland as a part of the brain that connects us with the universe and helps us receive the messages we need to live more serenely and experience more peaceful nights.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, a challenging period but in some ways also a fruitful one, we have begun to understand more clearly that the meaning of life must also be sought within ourselves.
We should learn to experience sunlight as a source of energy and self-awareness, as nourishment for our cells and mitochondria, and also for our spiritual dimension. Spirituality, for me, is one of the essential messages of the third eye.
My take-home message is very simple. During the first hours of the morning, spend some time outdoors and relax in the natural light. Take a meditative position and, during the gentle amber light at the beginning of the day, spend about 15 minutes allowing yourself to absorb its energy. Then go about your daily life. At sunset, return to the natural light and repeat the experience.
This practice has traditionally been called sun-gazing and has roots in ancient civilizations. The important point is that reconnecting with natural light is something simple that we can incorporate into our daily lives.
At my research institute, we use treatments involving infrasound and specific wavelengths, measured in nanometers, to stimulate the retina and the brain, with the aim of stimulating the pineal gland.
But reconnecting with natural light is something everyone can experience independently. It requires no sophisticated technology, only our attention and our willingness to become more conscious of our relationship with nature.
My final message is simple: Remember that we are guests on this planet, not its owners. Live with awareness, remain connected to the world around you and rediscover the extraordinary power of light.
