Running for Earth Day in Humboldt Park

A family-friendly 5k Walk/Run for Earth Day, sponsored by MerchantsBanc, seeks to turn eco-awareness into action at 8 a.m., April 21, at Humboldt Park, in Chicago. This green event provides an opportunity for people to enjoy our Earth’s natural environment. Cash prizes will be awarded, and strollers and dogs are allowed. A 100-yard Kids Run will be held after the main race. The event includes a Green Market from 8 a.m. to Noon, in which local vendors and companies will sell products and organic foods, and promote awareness.

Organizers are making a concerted effort to reduce the carbon footprint of the event by handing out reusable totes instead of plastic goodie bags, using biodegradable water bottles provided by Green Planet Water and composting all food scrapes. They will also collect reusable materials such as old running shoes, cell phones and corks from wine bottles. “If we are going to talk the talk, we'd better walk the walk and not compound the problem,” said Roberto Chavez, race director.

Register online at EarthDay5kChicago.com; at Fleet Feet, in Lincoln Square, from 4-8 p.m., Apr. 19 and 20; or before the race at the Humboldt Park Boathouse, beginning at 7 a.m.
