Vitamin D and Dental Health

Vitamin D is widely known for the regulation of calcium absorption and mineral balance that directly affects the maintenance of bone strength and initiates production of antimicrobial properties. These physiological functions reveal a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and increased cavities and periodontal disease. Dental caries (cavities) can develop when bacteria reduce the pH in the mouth. The acid that is formed then de-mineralizes the surface of the teeth that eventually can spread to dentin.

         A sufficient amount of vitamin D fosters properties that help reduce bacteria and acid in the mouth. Tooth enamel is composed primarily of minerals such as calcium, phosphorus and potassium. Vitamins D3 and K2 are vital in increasing the absorption of those minerals in the body. 

         The foods that contain vitamin D naturally are few and mainly from animal sources like salmon, tuna and sardines, so fulfilling the recommended dietary allowance for vitamin D can be difficult. Vitamin D is also absorbed through the skin as a result of UV light (sun) exposure. A combination of limited dietary supply and sunlight, especially in fall and winter months, contributes to the majority of the population being vitamin D deficient.

         When supplementing the diet, vitamin D is most readily available to be absorbed when taken in liquid or gel form. However, if vitamin D is ingested in capsule form, it is best to take it with cod or olive oil in order to help the body absorb the vitamin.

         Schedule a 25 hydroxy vitamin D blood test with a doctor. The results can assist them in recommending proper treatment, if necessary, for vitamin D deficiency. Also, be sure to visit a dentist regularly to help keep teeth and gums healthy.
