There Are No Mistakes in Life, Only Experiences

Jan 27, 2014 ● By Sunny Dawn Johnston

When we are going through a difficult period in our lives or are dealing with a crisis, it can feel like our lives are over. During these challenging times, many well-meaning people will say things like, “Well, everything happens for a reason,” or “Behind every gray cloud, there’s a silver lining.” Often, it is these types of statements that make us want to scream at the top of our lungs, “You just don’t understand, nothing will ever be the same!” or “Leave me alone, you have no idea.” When we are in the midst of such periods, these comments can be difficult to hear or believe.

But, what if it were true, and everything really does happen for a reason? What if we lived from a perspective that every experience that we have in life is designed to be an opportunity for growth, expansion, awareness and dare it be said—for love?

Most of us have been lucky enough to have had some rough patches that when looked back upon, can be seen with appreciation. Some have lived through catastrophes that seemed to occur for no good reason whatsoever. Broken hearts, financial ruin, abuse or even the death of a loved one can leave us with more questions than answers.

We all see these challenges differently, but the “whys” of it all can cause pain, sadness, anger, illness and depression. For some, the pain is so devastating that they can’t get out of bed, while others can take what happened and turn that energy into motivation. The way we choose to see things is what makes the difference.

We have an opportunity, in every minute of every day, to see events as a challenge or as a gift. What appears to be dire circumstances can ultimately be an opportunity for blessings, synchronicities and miracles. But in order to see the blessings, we have to change our perspective by changing our experience of it. Asking these questions with an open heart and mind can get us there quickly: What is the value of the experience? What is the gift? What have I learned? How have I grown?

Even in the darkest moments of our lives, a divine hand is at work. As we open to this possibility, we have an opportunity to embrace a new way of seeing things. Are you ready to live from a place where there truly are no mistakes, only experiences?
