The Advantages of Compounding Prescriptions

Dec 23, 2014 ● By Jim Kolar, RPh

In this world, one size does not fit all; just visit a shoe store for proof. Most standard, modern pharmacies (drug stores) carry many over-the-counter, non-prescription drugs, as well as everyday items such as magazines, sunglasses, candy or even small bits of office supplies.

Behind the druggist’s counter, drugs are kept that can only be sold by prescription. Bottles of mass-produced medications are counted and individually packaged for the customer but, sometimes one size doesn’t fit all; meaning that not all medications behind a druggist’s counter are suitable for each customer’s specific needs. A compounding pharmacy will actually make creams, capsules, liquids and other forms of medication prescribed by a doctor for patients with specific needs.

Compounding pharmacies are able to create custom medication strengths or dosage forms, such as a suspension instead of a capsule, or a cream instead of a tablet. People that are allergic to some of the common fillers used in manufactured tablets such as alcohol, lactose and dyes, and preservatives would greatly benefit from using a compounding pharmacy for their prescription needs.

Even more importantly, compounding allows a patient to avoid specific adverse drug reactions or drug interactions, for example, by making a topical medication instead of a tablet. They are even able to acquire or recreate discontinued manufactured products. Different flavorings can also be added to suspensions and solutions to make the most offensive concoctions palatable and more likely to be taken as prescribed.
