The Wellness Source Heals with Energetic Chiropractic Treatments

Dr. Nick Kuennen learned at an early age that the traditional medical model wasn’t right for him. After hitting his head in a sledding accident as a toddler, he spent years wondering why he always got sick. Drugs, antibiotics and surgery didn’t help. A few simple chiropractic treatments, however, took the pressure off his spine and restored his immune system, allowing him to fully function again as a child. His family shifted to a holistic outlook on medicine and he became interested in chiropractic. In 2011, he opened The Wellness Source, in Glenview, where his focus is providing healing and restorative chiropractic care by looking at how the mind, body and spirit all work together.

“The healing and restorative chiropractic care we offer at The Wellness Source emphasizes the importance of improving overall health. We are a very symptom-driven society. Our purpose is to help you understand that our daily lifestyle directly influences our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and overall quality of life,” says Kuennen. “An initial evaluation can include a stress resiliency test, Neuraltherm and muscle activity test, hormone level testing, a bioenergetics assessment, posture and range of motion testing, a digital pelvic analysis, X-rays, questionnaires and health histories. Depending on the results, treatments may include network spinal analysis (NSA) and traditional chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression, Rapid Release technology, spine and foot orthotics, neuromuscular release work and essential oil Raindrop Therapy.”

Kuennen treats people with a wide variety of conditions that have both physical and psychological symptoms. Some of the specific issues he addresses include headache, back pain, disc bulges, digestive disorders, ADHD and eye problems. “Chiropractic care is very beneficial for pregnant women, especially developing and newborn babies. Kids respond phenomenally to our chiropractic wellness care; we make sure that we choose an adjustment approach that works for the kids, as well as the parents,” he says.

Recently, Kuennen has been using a more gentle approach similar to NSA that supports the nervous system in reorganizing its stress response so more beneficial healthy responses and choices can be expressed. When our body goes into fight-or-flight mode, the systems don’t work as they should. It affects gut function, heart rate, blood sugar and the immune system. “The body can’t heal when it’s in this situation,” says Kuennen. “NSA employs a gentle touch to release adverse spinal cord tension in the spinal gateways and clear up interference in the nervous system.”

Kuennen also uses a BioModulator device, designed to maximize and promote cell regeneration and healing. It’s a non-invasive, handheld device that is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for symptomatic management of chronic pain, and Kuennen believes it truly helps with cellular healing and spinal correction. “If the body doesn’t have enough energy to do the basic properties it needs to become healthy, what will develop is sickness, pain and disease,” he says.

Community is very important to Kuennen, and he can often be seen at neighborhood events or health fairs speaking about stress management, peak performance and raising healthy kids. “I try to spread the message, encouraging people to be as healthy as possible,” he says. The Wellness Source also hosts meditation sessions and recently paired with a food panty to organize a holiday food drive.

To improve health on a daily basis, Kuennen recommends a few simple tips. “Go for a 20-minute walk, which will increase your blood flow and decrease stress. Drink plenty of clean, filtered, non-fluorinated water. Many people overeat because they’re dehydrated and nutrient-deficient, so water will help maintain proper weight, as well. We take in a lot of toxins in our food, water and environment, so whatever you can do to eliminate these will help your body to work as efficiently as possible.”

He believes the most important thing people can do to stay healthy is to slow down and truly focus on what’s going on in their bodies. “Sit for 20 minutes and listen to your breath,” he says. “Focus on how your chest feels and how everything is moving. You will come away much more relaxed and mindful of what you’re doing.”
