Experience a Celebration of Wisconsin Farms and Rural Life

Soil Sisters Wisconsin (SoilSistersWi.org) will offer an immersive farming and culinary experience from August 5 through 7, led by women committed to healthy, fresh produce or farm-made, artisanal food products and other items. From beef and heirloom tomatoes to jams, jellies and pickles; sheep to solar energy; and farmstay bed & breakfasts, these farmers and food producers share a unique diversity of farm experiences showcasing the summer’s bounty in Green County, Wisconsin, two-and-a-half hours northwest of Chicago.

“This is the fifth year of our Soil Sisters event, and we’re excited to add fresh offerings this year from new stops on the Tour of Farms that include Hawk’s Mill Winery to new workshops like on-farm yoga and ‘Be a farmer for a day’ for kids,” says Lisa Kivirist, of Inn Serendipity Farm and B&B (InnSerendipity.com) and author of Soil Sisters: A Toolkit for Women Farmers. “There’s something for everyone; for families, foodies, artists or girlfriends looking for a fun day in the country.”

The Dinner on the Farm, hosted by Sandhill Family Farms (SandhillFamilyFarms.com), at their farm in Brodhead, Wisconsin, takes place on August 6. Participants can meet co-owner Peg Sheaffer and her family for a fun-filled summer afternoon with a delicious farm to table meal served picnic-style. Adults will be greeted with locally brewed beer before the farm tour, listen to live music and end the celebration with a sunset bonfire and conversation with a community of like-minded, adventurous eaters.

“Hosting the Dinner on the Farm serves up the perfect opportunity to connect with where your food is grown, as you’ll be able to dine and view our growing fields,” explains Sheaffer. “We love participating in the whole Soil Sisters weekend, sharing our farm with the public and creating those connections between what’s on your plate and the farmers that grew your food. We look forward to seeing you on our farm and for you to meet the other Soil Sisters in our farm-hood!”
