Using Gems to Inspire and Comfort

Jun 23, 2017 ● By Peggy Malecki

"Crystals and minerals have been on the Earth for centuries, long before humans and animals inhabited the planet. So it goes without saying they have a lot of ‘energy’ in them; energy that can help us,” says Nors Beatriz, owner of Chicago’s MojoOwl, a showroom and healing center in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. In addition to carrying her own handmade jewelry, Beatriz offers crystals, energy healing, reiki and CranioSacral services at MojoOwl.

Beatriz says she tells people that when they’re attracted to a stone, it is because that stone has a message for them. “They don’t do the work for you, but they can help give us some peace or subtle guidance, and that’s how they help us. Sometimes it’s the color and sometimes it’s the properties, but they bring us beauty and comfort in the world. If you’ve ever seen an amethyst geode, then you know how bewitching they can be,” she explains.

Gems and crystals have been important to Beatriz since she started collecting them many years ago, and she believes they changed her life. When she turned 53 in 2016, she realized her body could no longer do massage work and was starting to burn out. She explains, “I wanted to focus more on the energy and the CranioSacral work that I already did. I also realized that I had a huge hobby of making jewelry and an equally huge collection of crystals. What better way of making a living than having more fun in your life with things you already have fun with?”

She explains, “Jewelry making is very healing for me. I love working with natural gems and crystals. I enjoy figuring which way to drill them or what’s the best way to show off their beauty. Colors and the combinations and the meanings of stones is mindboggling. It’s fun to play with gems and fun to be around them. It gives me lots of energy and joy to be around them.”

The MojoOwl showroom is open by appointment only, and Beatriz says that if she’s there, people can knock on the window and she’ll ask them in. She plans to add regular hours this summer. Clients can get a reading, experience energy healing and get assistance from Beatriz in picking out jewelry and crystals best suited to them.

“All the jewelry is about creating wearable, fun talismans, charms or touchstones for people to have some connection. I love making tiny, pretty things and I want to have a sense of playfulness. I’m a huge recycler, and often use old gold or silver chains to make newer pieces, or I can repair other jewelry to incorporate newer stones. Everything is done by hand, with a lot of positive energy,” says Beatriz.

MojoOwl is located at 3323 W. Diversey Ave., in Chicago, and Beatriz often has a booth at fairs around the city. Call 773-413-0749 or visit MojoOwl.com, Facebook and Instagram for events.
