Celebrate World Fair Trade Day in Daley Plaza

Chicagoans will join with more than 1,000 other fair trade cities around the world on May 7 and 8, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, to celebrate World Fair Trade Day and recognize the growing movement of ethical consumers. On Wednesday, Emanuel Kuntzelman, founder and president of Greenheart, will highlight fair trade’s links to the sustainability movement. Thursday’s noon program features WBEZ-91.5FM World View host Jerome McDonnell broadcasting live from Daley Plaza.

Co-sponsored by Chicago Fair Trade and the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, this year’s events focus on ethical apparel, as the campaign for a sweat-free Chicago that would govern public procurement of apparel moves forward in the City Council.

The disaster in Bangladesh last year heightened awareness of dangerous conditions for the majority of apparel workers. Learn more about ethical apparel by viewing Going Sweatfree, a fashion installation in Daley Plaza that contrasts working conditions of ethical and mainstream apparel.

Location: Daley Plaza, 50 W. Washington. For more information and full program details, email [email protected] or visit ChicagoFairTrade.org.
