Kudos

Lynn Hyndman has received the 2014 Charlotte Omohundro award, given annually by the Evanston Environmental Association (EEA) board of directors to a person or organization with an outstanding record of environmental stewardship and community service. She started a science program at Evanston’s Dawes Elementary School 25 years ago to make the outdoors part of her classroom and soon added a school prairie garden and a butterfly garden that allowed students to study ecosystems on the school’s doorstep.

In 2008, she started the Schools are Gardening in Evanston, with the help of the Dawes Garden Committee, to extend the concept to other schools in Evanston and Skokie. The program has grown to include 14 local school edible gardens.

Location: 2024 McCormick Blvd., Evanston.
