Energy Impact Illinois Rebates Extended

Homeowners can still save money on their monthly energy bills and increase the comfort of their homes by contacting Energy Impact Illinois (EI2), a partnership between local government, utility companies like ComEd, Nicor Gas and other nonprofit groups. Rebates and loans available to homeowners that complete energy efficiency home improvements have been extended until August (see “EI2 Offers Rebates and Loan Options,” in our April issue). Homeowners are encouraged to sign up for the program as soon as possible to allow for time to complete improvements before the deadline.

The extension will allow more homeowners to obtain a low-cost energy assessment and home energy improvements that result in immediate improved comfort and cost savings. Through the EI2 program, home energy assessments from qualified contractors, typically costing hundreds of dollars, are available for $99. No additional purchases are required to receive this discounted pricing. To save even more money, EI2 is offering a free home assessment for homeowners that host a house party for family, friends and neighbors to learn about energy efficiency from a program expert and a certified contractor.

Rebates of up to $1,750, or up to 70 percent off the cost of home energy upgrades like sealing air leaks and improving insulation, offered in conjunction with area utility companies, are available to homeowners that complete improvements by August 26 or when funds are expended.

Sealing air leaks and insulating a home are two of the most cost-effective and permanent improvements that homeowners can make. More than half of total energy costs come from heating and cooling a home, and almost all homes let too much air escape or penetrate. Most homes also have incorrectly installed or insufficient amounts of attic insulation. To complete the repairs, EI2 connects homeowners with certified and vetted contractors that take a whole-home approach to maximize savings.

In addition to the rebates, EI2 offers a loan option that enables homeowners to make improvements now and repay over time. Qualified borrowers can get an interest rate of 8 percent or less from Green Choice Bank or two approved credit unions, and EI2 will pay the interest for the first year. EI2 is run by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, through a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
