Beaver Dam Pepper Celebration is Scrumptious

The Scrumptious Pantry and Slow Food Chicago are teaming up for a series of events celebrating a rare heirloom pepper variety.

The Beaver Dam Pepper Celebration, to be held between September 16 and 22, offers the opportunity to sample this mildly spicy pepper at participating restaurants, farmers’ markets and in-store tastings. In the Tour de Menu (September 19 through 21), local chefs will feature the Beaver Dam Pepper in menu specials. Billy Sunday, Big Jones, Uncommon Ground, Green Zebra and Standard Market are among the restaurants highlighting this Wisconsin varietal, and Katherine Anne Confections will create a unique truffle just for the celebration.

The Heirloom Flavors Potluck tops off the celebration from 5:30 to 7:30p.m., September 22, at Scrumptious Pantry, 3230 West Fullerton Avenue, in Logan Square, Chicago. Every dish that incorporates any heirloom variety or showcases a family recipe is welcome. The event is BYOB. In the spirit of environmental sustainability, bring a plate and silverware. Glasses are provided. The winner of the Beaver Dam Pepper Growing Competition will also be announced.

Purchase this special pepper at Green City Market and Logan Square Farmers’ Market at the booths of Radical Root Organic Farm, Majestics Nursery and Montalbano Farms. Scrumptious Pantry’s pickled Beaver Dam Pepper is available at all Whole Foods Stores and other selected retailers around Chicago.
