Siding-1 Windows-1 Exteriors: Ready to Tackle Home Improvement Projects

Jan 27, 2014 ● By Megy Karydes

It’s about this time of year when many of us start feeling like spring is just around the corner. Maybe not, because we’re still in the throes of winter, but this is the perfect time to think about our windows, siding and roofing needs, says Siding-1 Windows-1 Exteriors’ general manager, known to everyone simply as “JD”.

Siding-1 Windows-1 Exteriors has been servicing homeowners in the city and suburbs for more than 25 years, and part of the reason it’s been around so long is that repeat customers appreciate its unrelenting attention to detail, high-quality products and workmanship and customer service, according to JD.

Although most people think few home repairs can be done during the winter months, JD says this is a prime time to take stock of our home and prepare a checklist of things that need to be repaired or replaced and schedule a complimentary consultation. “Most people get up every day and don’t realize how much energy loss their home is experiencing,” he notes. “During the winter months, though, homeowners may notice condensation forming by the windows, feel drafts or realize they need better insulation.”

JD asks homeowners to do an overview of the exterior of their homes and notice any unsightly areas. Is paint peeling from wood siding? Are shingles missing from the roof? Are there any broken windows? If so, consider whether insulation would be beneficial.

A common misconception, says JD, is that repairs or replacements will be costly. He cautions against waiting too long to make updates, because costs increase as things continue to deteriorate. “Some customers don’t realize that the repair or replacement is sometimes very affordable, and they regret not having made the call sooner,” he says.

There are other cases, he adds, when the homeowner believes a complete replacement is necessary, only to find out a repair is possible. “People don’t understand what’s possible, what things cost and how much time it takes,” JD states. “This is why calling to schedule a free evaluation is worth it.” He also recommends customers get more than one quote, because his best customers are the ones that make an educated decision to hire his company. Consultations can be scheduled anytime during the week or weekends, based on when it’s most convenient for the homeowner. A typical consultation lasts from 20 to 30 minutes, according to JD.

The company has two showrooms, one in Chicago and another in Naperville, with samples of doors, roofs and other materials, but JD says each member of his road team is equipped with samples, so customers don’t even need to step into a showroom to look at options.

One of the reasons that now is a good time to schedule a consultation is because if anything needs to be ordered, it can take several weeks to arrive, although the installation process itself usually only takes a couple of days. Getting a head start by deciding what needs to be ordered can save a lot of time.

“Installing windows or a new roof usually only takes about a day or two, while siding takes about a week,” explains JD. However, getting the windows in can take anywhere between four and five weeks, so ordering them during the winter helps because once they arrive, installation can begin immediately.Siding-1 Windows-1

Although they don’t do installations when it gets below 25 degrees outside, installing windows during the early spring months is ideal, because it’s usually a slower time for many homeowners and it knocks out a home improvement project before the spring cleaning itch hits, allowing homeowners to tackle other outside projects.

JD also invites homeowners to come to The Old House New House Home Show, at Pheasant Run Resort, in St. Charles, on February 8 and 9, to meet with representatives from his company and ask questions.

“Customers can request a free ticket (from our office) and join us for breakfast in the ballroom where we’ll be broadcasting live on WGN radio and talking about home improvements with Mr. Fix-It, Lou Manfredi,” adds JD.

Whether home improvement goals include replacing old windows with energy-efficient replacement windows, installing more durable siding or a new roof, or giving the home a fresh look with a complete aesthetic rehab, JD knows his team of experts at Siding-1 Windows-1 Exteriors are qualified to do the job well.
