Dr. Irina Tutunikov, founder of Healthyon Institute, in Glenview, uses a holistic approach to help patients manage complex chronic diseases and restore their health. Using discoveries in nutrigenomics, genetics, women’s health, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, environmental medicine and nutrition, she brings up-to-date research data into her clinical practice while giving patients extensive time and attention. She says, “We are getting to the root cause of the disease through a detailed and comprehensive look at your health and by treating body and mind as a whole.”
Tutunikov uses functional medicine to treat chronic, poorly managed conditions such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, autoimmune diseases, hormonal imbalances, infertility, anxiety and depression, gastrointestinal and thyroid disturbances, chronic infections, obesity, acne and cardiovascular disease. She is certified by the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine and a member of the Institute for Functional Medicine.
Functional medicine incorporates the best diagnostic tools and technologies from conventional medicine and emerging, cutting-edge tests and tools that help identify critical imbalances that are causing disease. “My practice is patient-centered, individualized and personalized, instead of the conventional disease-oriented, population-centered approach. I work with my patients to find individual treatments that are designed to complement their genetic and biochemical makeup,” notes Tutunikov.
An initial evaluation starts with the doctor gathering comprehensive background information that helps her understand the patient’s history and overall health. “I ask patients to fill out detailed forms online which provide information on their dietary habits, exercise, sleep, medications and supplements, as well as old labs and radiological studies. Those forms are very important, as I spend a lot of time prior to the visit thinking about the information provided. During the visit, I do a thorough physical exam and we discuss findings and develop a preliminary treatment plan. I may refer patients for additional laboratory testing, which helps to unveil genetic makeup and detect nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, microbiome particularities and toxicities,” explains Tutunikov.
Whenever possible, she looks for treatments other than traditional medications to treat conditions such as pain, inflammation and allergies. “For example, holistic pain management includes osteopathic manipulations, massages, acupuncture, customized exercise regimens, topical and plant-based analgesics, supplements and dietary modifications. All of these measures are aiming at reducing inflammation naturally,” advises Tutunikov.
