Many men take pride in being tough, independent and resilient—but medical research shows that traditional male norms, such as self-reliance and stoicism, often contribute to delaying doctor visits. A 2024 study published in JAMA Network Open highlights this growing concern. Researchers found that men that strongly expressed traditional masculine traits were significantly less likely to receive timely cardiovascular risk assessments or follow recommended treatment plans. This pattern has real consequences: Men are more likely to have undiagnosed cardiovascular risk factors, even when clear signs—such as elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol or erectile dysfunction—are present.
Clinicians at UChicago Medicine emphasize that delays in care often lead to missed opportunities for early detection and prevention, especially for heart disease, the leading cause of death for men in the United States.
Taking charge of our health doesn’t contradict strength—it defines it. Ignoring or postponing care doesn’t make symptoms disappear. Issues like fatigue, decreased stamina, erectile dysfunction, low testosterone, weight gain or rising blood pressure are not merely “signs of aging”—they are signals that the body may require attention. The earlier these concerns are addressed, the easier they are to treat.
Annual checkups, routine lab tests, open discussions about sexual health, and asking questions when something feels “off” are powerful steps that protect men’s ability to thrive physically, mentally and sexually.
At Chicago Male Clinic, we encourage men to view preventive care as an investment in their energy, vitality and long-term wellness. Early evaluation can identify silent risks, guide targeted treatment and restore confidence. Proactive care can safeguard health for years to come.
