Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, in Wilmington, will celebrate both National Trails Day and its 30th anniversary with an open house from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 6. Hosted by the U.S. Forest Service, the event invites the public to explore the prairie’s trail system while learning about restoration, conservation and recreation efforts.

The open house will include interpretive stations at multiple locations. Attendees can hike, bike or drive from trailhead to trailhead to learn about prairie restoration, the bison project, recreation opportunities, and the role agriculture and grazing play in restoration efforts. Family activities and the Illinois Natural History Survey Traveling Science Center will also be featured at the Welcome Center.

“National Trails Day and our 30th anniversary are great opportunities for us to showcase the tremendous work that has been done on Midewin over the past decades to transform this place from an ammunition plant into the multifaceted public land it is today,” says Prairie Supervisor Robert West.
