The Talking Farm to Build Urban Project in Skokie Park

The Skokie Park District has voted to enter into an agreement with the nonprofit The Talking Farm, an organization dedicated to urban agriculture, to allow access to a two-acre site near the Evanston-Skokie border, on Chicago’s North Shore, to establish an urban farm. The Talking Farm plans to use the land to grow produce using sustainable methods; to offer classes in growing, preserving and enjoying local foods; and to conduct research relevant to urban agriculture.

Linda Kruhmin, farm operations manager, says, “This land home gives The Talking Farm a wonderful, central location for its production and teaching activities." They plan to construct a 10,000-square-foot raised bed demonstration garden and later, a permanent, net-zero energy building with greenhouse and root cellar, a small orchard and agro-forest, fences for vertical growing and hoop houses for season extension.

“Produce from the farm will ultimately be available to local restaurants, schools, farmers’ markets, and individuals,” said Kruhmin, adding that surplus produce will be donated to local food pantries.

Tours of the site at 3701 Howard St., in Skokie, are available. To arrange a visit, to volunteer or to learn more, call 847-425-5125 or email [email protected].
