Chicago Area Hospitals Committed to Excellence

Mar 27, 2016 ● By Stacia Clinton

The Healthy Food in Health Care Pledge taken by hospitals provides a framework to improve the health of patients, communities and the environment. Hundreds of healthcare facilities and food service contractors across the U.S. have signed it to demonstrate their commitment; “First, do no harm,” and treat food and its production and distribution as preventive medicine.

The Pledge is also the foundation of the Healthier Food Challenge, one of the six focus areas of the Healthier Hospitals (HH) program within Practice Greenhealth. HH is a comprehensive, sector-wide initiative that institutes frameworks and implementation tools that can be used by every health care facility in the nation.

“Advocate Health Care’s support of the Pledge confirms our belief that healthy food plays an essential role in promoting health, well-being and healing,” says Mary Larsen, director of space management and sustainability at Advocate Health Care.
